The JFT-Basic (Japanese Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) evaluates whether you can communicate effectively in everyday and workplace Japanese. Understanding the structure of the test is the first step to building a realistic study plan.
Understand the Four Assessment Areas
The official examination covers four broad areas. Organise your preparation around each one:
- Words and Kanji — everyday vocabulary, basic kanji, and written expressions used at work and in daily life.
- Conversation and Expression — short dialogues, polite forms, and practical phrases for the workplace.
- Listening — audio-based comprehension covering instructions, announcements, and short conversations.
- Reading — understanding notices, menus, simple forms, and workplace documents.
Build a Weekly Study Routine
Consistency matters more than cramming. A realistic schedule might look like this:
- Weekdays (30–45 minutes): Focus on one area each day — for example, vocabulary on Monday, listening on Tuesday, and so on.
- Weekends (60–90 minutes): Take a full mock test under timed conditions, then review every question you got wrong.
Use Mock Tests Strategically
Completing practice tests helps you:
- get used to the question format before the real examination;
- identify your weaker areas so you can allocate study time more effectively;
- build time awareness so you do not run short on the day.
After each mock test, review the explanations for every question — not just the ones you missed. Understanding why a correct answer is correct reinforces your knowledge.
Resources to Use Alongside Practice Tests
Supplement your preparation with:
- the Japan Foundation's official sample questions and guidance documents;
- a Japanese–English or Japanese–Nepali dictionary for unfamiliar vocabulary;
- listening resources such as NHK Web Easy or similar beginner audio content;
- flashcard tools for memorising high-frequency workplace vocabulary.
Important Reminders
Practice materials — including those on this platform — are not the official examination. Always check the official JFT-Basic website for current eligibility requirements, registration procedures, testing locations, and fees before applying.
