Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Skill Tests evaluate whether a candidate has the occupational knowledge and judgment needed to work safely and effectively in a particular industry in Japan. Unlike JFT-Basic, each SSW Skill Test is specific to an occupational field.
Which Industries Require Skill Tests?
The Japanese government has designated multiple industries under the SSW programme. Commonly tested fields include:
- Nursing Care / Caregiving
- Food Service
- Food & Beverage Manufacturing
- Building Cleaning / Housekeeping
- Manufacturing
Each field has its own examination administered by the relevant industry body. Visit ssw.go.jp for the authoritative list and registration details.
What Do the Tests Cover?
Questions typically assess:
- safety procedures relevant to the workplace;
- hygiene and sanitation standards (especially for food-related fields);
- practical judgment in realistic work scenarios;
- industry-specific terminology in Japanese;
- correct responses to everyday workplace situations.
How to Study Effectively
Because skill tests are industry-specific, your study approach should match the field you are aiming for:
- Caregiving: Focus on care fundamentals, infection prevention, and communication with elderly residents.
- Food Service: Study hygiene rules, proper food handling, and customer service procedures.
- Manufacturing: Review workplace safety standards, quality awareness, and production workflow terminology.
Using Mock Tests Wisely
Practise under realistic conditions — set a timer and avoid looking up answers mid-test. After completing a session, study the explanation for each question thoroughly. A question you got right for the wrong reason is still a gap in your knowledge.
Official vs Practice Resources
Our practice questions are based on publicly available examination guidance and are developed independently. They are not sourced from official examination papers. Always confirm requirements and find official sample questions from the relevant industry examination body before your examination date.
